I started reading The Astronaut Wives Club by Lily Koppel in the sauna last night. I’m sure that I will enjoy this non fiction look at the behind the scenes lives of the astronauts who were the founding fathers of our space program. I’m very interested in the space program because I own a place near the Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral. I hope to learn some cool trivia about the astronauts, their wives and families. I was particularly struck by the focus of the wives on their image. The wives had all decided to wear pink lipstick on their first Life cover in honor of Mamie Eisenhower and her love of pink, but the editors touched up the photo and changed their lipstick color to red because the editorial staff felt that red was a more patriotic color. I’m sure there will be more tidbits such as this because NASA and the government were intent on having the very finest men and women representing the nation’s space program and would do anything to make it look that way.
