I just finished reading The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes. My first impression of this novel was that it was a really bizarre concept – time traveling serial killer? It just seemed absurd and I was a bit reluctant to read it even though I am usually really open-minded and enjoy a plethora of paranormal novels as well as gobbling up books in a wide variety of genres. So, I tried it with some trepidation.
The author is masterful at creating suspense and also doing her research on the time periods. I thoroughly enjoyed how she mixed the gritty reality of a psychotic serial killer, Harper Curtis, with the fantasy of traveling through time. I became invested in the characters, especially the murder victims – The Shining Girls. Miraculously, one of the girls, Kirby, survives Harper’s butchery and lives to try to put the pieces of the murder mystery together. Don’t let the strange concept of the book dissuade you from picking it up. Read The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes. You will not be disappointed.
Warning: Contains scenes of extreme violence.
